it's my understanding that hinault promissed to ride for lemond in '86 as greg had ridden for him in '85, yet the badger still attacked his team mate, most notably on alpe d'huez. lemond caught hinault and the two rode up the final stretch side by side. i don't think bernard was happy about this, but it shows the tact of lemond that he encouraged hinault to ride hand in hand with him accross the line. obviously hinault made sure it was his wheel that crossed the line first though.

Watch Hinault win the '81 Paris-Roubaix. Note that he leads out the sprint FOR THE ENTIRE FINAL LAP and yet still wins!! As Louison Bobet (who was in attendance) said, what a beast.

Hinault had great talent, no doubt, but his attitude, his naked aggession was what awed me. To this day I envision myself as him when I attack! I remember watching the 86 tour when the Badger attacked while wearing yellow and with 5 minutes on LeMond; I thought "What an incredibly bold move... crazy maybe, but I beleive the French fell in love with him that day for that very reason"

I have always admired Hinault. That was an exciting era in cycling, and he contributed greatly to it.
