In 2005 I went to ride during the Tour and happened on a small town with a giant poster of the real Gaul drinking from the fountain in '59 - what a photo op! He was truly the "Angel of the Mountains;" my riding friends dubbed me "Escargot de le Montagne." I think Charly is still up there on Mont Ventoux pulling for all these new boys! I just discovered this blog and will check back. In looking at the photos of him as a rider and then as an older man, it is hard to believe they are the same guy. I'm not referring to weight, either.
